Unit 2, Lessons 1-3

The Language Project Spanish Program Adventures Level Family Focus

In Unit 2, students are learning about clothes and weather. Use some of the activities below to reinforce the vocabulary, phrases and concepts and help your child jump ahead in their journey towards bilingualism.

Objective: To become familiar with different clothing items

Focus Words: camiseta (t-shirt), pantalones (pants), falda (skirt), vestido (dress), calcetines (socks), zapatos (shoes), vaqueros (jeans), abrigo (coat), pijamas (pijamas), bufanda (scarf), guantes (gloves) gorro (hat), suéter (sweater)

Focus Activities:

  • Make a Spanish Snowman:
    • Hopefully we have a white Christmas this year. When it snows, make sure to bundle those kids up and send them outdoors to make a Spanish snowman.
    • Ask questions like "¿Cuántas bolas?" (How many snowballs?) Count them.
    • Have your child dress the snowman by naming the articles of clothing in Spanish.
  • Plan ahead:
    • Have your child pick out their clothes the night before and tell you what they chose in Spanish.
    • Speaking a new language with family and friends is always scary and takes some time. The trick is to find a way to motivate them to practice, practice, practice.
  • Read: As you are reading with your child, it is always good to stop and ask questions about the characters, story or illustrations. Try asking a few in Spanish.
  • Point to the picture and ask…
    • ¿Cómo se llama? / What´s his name?
    • ¿Cuántos años tiene? / How old is he?
    • ¿Qué lleva? / What is he wearing?
    • ¿Qué color es? / What color is it?
    • ¿Cuántos hay? / How many are there?

Language acquisition requires 75 or more meaningful uses of a word or structure to truly learn it. Family involvement in language learning can make a big difference to achieve this!
