Unit 1, Lessons 1-3
The Language Project Spanish Program Explorers Level Family Focus
Hola familias!
Your children have started the “Explorers” Spanish language program. Some students are brand new to Spanish, and others have already started their language journey. We meet your learners where they are to build their skills using Spanish immersion and natural language acquisition methodologies.
Families are highly encouraged to add in Spanish activities at home when possible to increase retention of the language. Each activity in the class or at home is a stepping stone to learning and retaining new language and structures.
Focus Phrases:- Me llamo… (My name is…), ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?), Estoy bién. (I’m fine.), Estoy mal. (I’m not good.), ¡Estoy super bién! (I’m great!), Hay (There is/There are), Mírame (Look at me), Cantamos (Let’s sing), Contamos (Let’s count), Levántense (Everybody get up), Siéntense (Everybody sit down)
Focus Words:hola (hi), adiós (goodbye), león (lion), serpiente (snake), gorila (gorilla), lobo (wolf), oso (bear), niño (boy), niña (girl), uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten)
Family Focus Activities:
- Count anything and everything you see in Spanish. Make a game of it and see who can spot things to count. Then say how many there are of an item. For example: Hay cinco. (There are five.) Hay cinco osos. (There are five bears.)
- Try using simple commands around the house. For example, when it’s dinner time call the kids to the table and say “Siéntense, por favor.” (more than one person) or “Siéntate, por favor.” (for one person) (Por favor = please).
- Make a simple nine square BINGO card. Let the kids write in their ‘numeros’, then take turns drawing and calling the numbers 1-10. Make sure to mix up the numbers and practice them out of order or even backwards so that students are becoming familiar with the numbers out of sequence.
Need practice? Listen to the numbers forwards and backwards in these audios: Números 1-10 and Números 1-10 (backwards).
