Unit 3, Lessons 6-8

The Language Project Spanish Program Explorers Level Family Focus

These next few weeks students will be learning about places around town. Have them name the different places they say as you are driving around town or try one of the other ideas below. You don't have to know Spanish yourself to help your child grow in their language abilities!

Focus Objectives: Become familiar with basic places around town.

Focus Phrases: ¿Que hace? (What are you doing?), ¿Adonde vas? (Where are you going?)

Focus Vocabulary: lugares (places), casa (house), supermercado (supermarket/grocery store), panadería (bakery), heladería (ice cream shop), chocolatería (chocolate shop), banco (bank), correos (post office), cine (movie theater)

Focus Audio: As you drive around town, call out the name when you see one of these Lugares (Places).

Family Focus Activities:

  • Back to the basics: These are some tougher words to pronounce as they are a bit longer so using the Lugares (Places) a step by step process will help your child gain confidence with the new content and retain the information.
  • Step 1: Play the audio for your child and have them pause and repeat after each word.
  • Step 2: Turn off the volume, replay the link and see how many your child can remember.
  • Step 3: Turn back on the volume and have your child race to beat the speaker to say the word. Make it a game, give them a point for each word they remember and say!
  • Create a “to do” list for weekly errands with the places you need to go: Tell your child some of the things you have to do throughout the week and see if they can make a list in Spanish of the places you need to go. Then let them cross them off as you complete them. Who loves TO DO lists? I do! They are just as great, if not better, in a different language!
  • Imagination: Have your child draw a picture of their ideal shops: heladería, supermercado, cine, etc. Dont forget to ask them about their picture.
